World's largest toast - Genever - Tales of the Cocktail 2011

OVER 400 BARTENDERS, IMBIBERS AND COCKTALIANS WORLDWIDE JOINED THE WORLD’S LARGEST GENEVER TOAST AT TALES OF THE COCKTAIL ON JULY 20th 2011

(New Orleans, LA – July 20, 2011) — 400 plus Imbibers and revelers alike were a part of history on July 20, 2011 at the ninth annual Tales of the Cocktail event in New Orleans. Lucas Bols invited guests of Tales of the Cocktail as well as neighboring NOLA residents and visitors to set a world record by joining in the World’s Largest Kopstootje Toast on Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at approximately 2:15 p.m. on the frontsteps of the Hotel Monteleone (immediately after the Toast to Tales of the Cocktail official opening ceremony).

Literally translated as a “little head butt”, a Kopstootje® is a shot sipped from an original Dutch tulip glass filled to the brim with Bols Genever and paired up with a beer. The trick for bartenders is to fill the tulip glass to the absolute rim creating a meniscus shape that almost overflows. Drinkers bend forward and slurp the top, then take a sip of the accompanying beer.

The Bols Genever Kopstootje® (pronounced kop-stow-tjuh) represents aunique, century long Dutch tradition. Since re-introducing Bols Genever to the U.S. cocktail community as one of the important classic cocktail spirits, Lucas Bols USA is now taking the next step (back) to introduce Kopstootje® the authentic way of drinking Genever in Holland.

“We are excited to have so many cocktail enthusiasts join us to mark this special occasion at Tales of the Cocktail, “ said Tal Nadari, Managing Director, Lucas Bols USA. “We are happy to raise a glass to all the bartender community and general public that continue to educate themselves on classic cocktails and history, and thrilled that so many joined us today.”

Lucas Bols has hewn close to the historic and cultural traditions for serving Genever while re-introducing the spirit to modern drinkers. Gathering around the punch bowl was a common way to congregate and share a drink during the pre-Prohibition “Golden Age” of cocktails….

Though Genever fell into obscurity in the U.S. post-Prohibition, people never stopped drinking it in its native country, Holland. “Kopstootje”, literally translated as a “little head butt”, remains a quintessential Dutch tipple and is famously enjoyed sipped from an original tulip glass filled with Bols Genever and paired with a beer. It is very popular amongst the Dutch and, with the introduction of the tulip glass, the Lucas Bols company is seeing this fun drinking ritual also becoming a big hit in the U.S.

Bols Genever, distilled to perfection in 1820, is one of the oldest independent spirit categories on record. The company, Lucas Bols, has been making Genever since 1664 and Genever was instrumental in the rise of the cocktail in the U.S. at the turn of the century. The spirit went off the U.S. market during Prohibition and was virtually unavailable – and therefore little known – to modern American drinkers until the recent re-launch in 2008.

Bols Genever is imported from Holland by Lucas Bols U.S.A. / MHW Ltd and is available in New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Illinois, Oregon, California, Arizona and Louisiana. The suggested retail price is $38.95 for a 750 ml bottle. For more information, Bols Genever outlets and cocktail recipes visit www.bolsgenever.com

Lucas Bols B.V. was originally established in 1575 in Amsterdam. The company is built on a long and rich heritage which forms the basis for all of its brands. Based in Amsterdam, Lucas Bols B.V. distributes across 110 countries. www.lucasbols.com. As one of the world’s leading cocktail liqueur and spirit producers, the company prides itself on its commitment to innovation and excellence, incorporating the lively, cosmopolitan spirit of modern day Amsterdam with an international flavour.

Genever was awarded the prestigious AOC status (Appellation d’Origine Controllée) in 2007 and can only be named as such if produced in Holland and a few neighbouring areas.
