Surrounded by the splendid landscapes of Elciego (Álava) stands the old wine cellar of the Herederos de Marqués de Riscal (1858). Over this, as if it was a vine plant, grows the new building designed by the prestigious Canadian architect, Frank O. Gehry – famous for projects such as the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao – the complexity of which, with its innovative shapes and use of materials, marks a great architectural achievement.
This project, the City of Wine, is one of the most ambitious projects among the many which have been undertaken in Spanish bodegas to date. The complex has been designed with the idea of creating a whole world of sensations for the enjoyment of wine lovers. The City of Wine complex as a whole, which covers an area of almost 100,000 m2, consists of the old Marqués de Riscal bodega, a luxury hotel, an “haute cuisine” restaurant, a wine therapy spa, a meeting and conventions centre and a banqueting area.
The materials used and the shapes are two of the building’s main features. Gehry has used materials and forms similar to those he used for the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, although this time the titanium which covers the structure – the Canadian architect’s personal trademark – use the colours of Marqués de Riscal:
- Pink: red wine
- Gold: mesh entwined around the bottle
- Silver: capsule of the bottle
The building’s spectacular appearance, the rich surrounding landscape and the Riscal site itself all help to create an exceptional setting for enjoying a unique and unrepeatable experience.
THE PERFECT UNION: TRADITION AND MODERNITY
Marqués de Riscal have merged the concepts of tradition and modernity and have made it possible for the old stone premises and the ultra-modern design of the new building to sit happily beside each other. The symbol of modernity is the new building which houses the Hotel Marques de Riscal which will be operated by The Luxury Collection of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. Guests will be able to enjoy all the exquisite, personalized services of a luxury hotel combined with the views of vines and the medieval town of Elciego, a setting full of charm, peace and tranquillity.
