May 1st, 2010 marks the 136th “Run for the Roses” at Churchill Downs in Louisville, KY. I don’t know about you, but I can’t think about the Kentucky Derby without conjuring images of majestic horses, ladies in fun and flirty hats, and of course, cool, frosty and refreshing Mint Juleps. In the spring edition of in the Mix, Tony Abou-Ganim’s article “Make Mine a Mint Julep Please!” included his recipe for the Mint Julep. While enjoying the spectacle on NBC, culminating in the “Greatest Two Minutes in Sports”, mix up a batch of these for an authentic Derby Day of your own.
While most everyone knows the Derby, lesser known, but still as historical, the 136th Kentucky Oaks will be run this afternoon, April 30th. And as the Mint Julep is the signature drink of the Kentucky Derby, so the signature drink of the “Ladies First” race is the Oaks Lily®.
1 oz. Vodka
1 oz. Sweet & sour
3 oz. Cranberry Juice
Splash of Triple Sec
Mix all ingredients, pour in a stem-less wine glass with crushed ice and garnish with an orange wedge and cherry.
Enjoy this lily inspired, cold and refreshing libation while watching the fillies run this evening
