VODKA: Unique and Different Varieties

in the Mix Magazine - Vodka Tasting - Reyka

bronze gamma award winner 2012

REYKA

Origin: Iceland
Supplier: Wm Grant & Son’s
Website: reyka.com
Notes: Small batch distilled in a rare Carter Head still with Arctic spring water. Lava rock filtered.
Color: Crystal Clear
Nose: Pure and clean, nothing jumps out at you, except the pureness!
Flavor: Again, pure and clean. According to Wikipedia, its level of dissolved solids in the water they use is less than 1/15 that of Evian bottled water. And the purer the vodka, the less it tastes like anything. It still has flavor, not like the Russian or French we are used to, but it’s such a pure flavor you will love it! Excellent!

Organic Vodkas

in the Mix Magazine - Vodka Tasting - Square One Organic Vodka, Square One Cucumber, Square One BotanicalOrigin: Bottled in Rigby, Idaho
Website: squareonevodka.com

Square One Organic Vodka
Notes: 100% organic American rye with water from the Snake River watershed of the Teton Range.
Color: Clear
Nose: Soft and refined, the only thing that stands out to me is a nice background of soft wheat or artesian bread.
Flavor: The wheat, or rye I should say, flavor warms you on the palette, but it’s not hot. It’s a rich flavor with some tropical hints. The finish is grainy and long. Well done!

Square One Cucumber
Notes: Made with 100% organic rye and cucumbers, water from a deep Snake River aquifer.
Color: Clear
Nose: Smells just like a cucumber, not an artificial aroma, but a soft fresh garden scent that is delivered without any nostril burn or harshness.
Flavor: Tastes just like a cucumber, with a little kick! Very smooth, medium dry and oiliness. A nice mid-palette burst and a long soft finish. Very nice!

Square One Botanical (not really vodka)
Notes: 90 proof – This product is not a vodka, nor is it a gin. It is a proprietary bottling that is bridging the gap between vodka and gin. Best put by Margie Goolan of Square One – “Mixologists loyal to gin, don’t want to see the value of true gin overshadowed in any way. But restaurants often find that their customers are afraid of gin, and these restaurants want something new to offer their guests that are more complex than vodka cocktails. Which is the gap that Square One Botanical seeks to fill. We’re not trying to be a gin-less gin. Rather, we’ve created a botanically complex spirit that is a beautiful new execution for vodka besides the singular, often sweet, vodka flavors that are on the market.”
Color: Clear
Nose: A plethora of aromas come out in this spirit, I sense the lavender, rosemary and lemon the most. It has 8 botanicals in all. Pear, rose, chamomile, lemon verbena, lavender, rosemary, coriander and citrus peel.
Flavor: Well, let me try to explain this one…the higher proof really settles it down, the flavors mix well on the palette. I pick up the pear on the start with the coriander and citrus finishing up strong. Let’s face it; this will taste a little different to everyone. But rest assured, it is a well made and interesting spirit worth trying. Excellent.

in the Mix Magazine - Vodka Tasting - Prairie Organic

Prairie
Origin: USA Minnesota
Supplier: Phillips Distilling Company
Website: prairievodka.com
Notes: 80 proof, 5th generation of the Phillips Distilling Com., distilled from corn.

in the Mix Magazine - Vodka Tasting - Deaths Door

Death’s Door
Origin: Wisconsin, Washington Island
Website: deathsdoorspirits.com
Notes: 80 proof “Vintage August 2010”. 60% organic hard red winter wheat from Washington Island and 40% organic malted barley from Chilton, Wisconsin. One of my favorite boutique distillers. Named after the treacherous channel that separates Washington Island from the mainland.
Color: Crystal Clear
Nose: Surprisingly mellow, you can smell the red wheat in it. No heat or nose sting at all.
Flavor: Very rich and creamy. A bit oily and viscous. Definitely some vanilla with a wee bit of white pepper in it. Outstanding product.

Flavored Vodkas

in the Mix Magazine - Vodka Tasting - Pinky

Pinky
Origin: Sweden
Supplier: Liquidity, Inc.
Website: pinkyvodka.com
Notes: 80 proof. Obviously this would appeal to the female audience, but I think the mixability in hand-crafted cocktails will transcend that gender block.
Color: Pink, of course! Actually a metallic light pink to be exact.
Nose: Very aromatic. Herbal and medicinal.
Flavor: Medium bodied and off dry. Not sweet. It starts slowly and gives you a sharp alcohol spike in mid-palette, finishing in phases, meaning it seems to take steps leaving your palette.

in the Mix Magazine - Vodka Tasting - Chambord Vodka

Chambord – Chambord Flavored Vodka
Origin: France
Supplier: Brown-Forman
Website: chambordonline.com
Notes: 75 proof. Should be a great mixer from club soda to champagne. A Chambord Vodka Cosmo sounds wonderful.
Color: Silvery light lavender
Nose: Pleasant, a little cotton candy and of course black raspberry.
Flavor: A full viscous feel, slightly sweet with good berry flavor but not overwhelming. Fairly moderate thru the palette without any big changes throughout. The finish is supple, not long.

Color: Clear
Nose: A nice tropical coconut, refined, it doesn’t slap you with the aroma, it lets you reach for it with gratifying results.
Flavor: Very viscous and creamy in the mouth. The flavor is not over-powering, but true. One of the few flavored vodkas I could drink on its own. It finishes clean and soft.

Vodka Tasting - Stolichnaya

Stoli White Pomegranik

Vodka Tasting - Skyy Infusions

SKYY Infusions Dragon Fruit
Origin: USA San Francisco
Supplier: SKYY Spirits
Website: skyyvodka.com
Notes: 70 proof
Color: Clear
Nose: A bit zesty right off the start settling into a wonderful tropical fragrance.
Flavor: Tastes a bit like cherries, a little sweet, but you can still taste the spirit in it with a nice crisp alcohol ribbon through it. I think this would do well in several drink combos including juices, soda and 7-UP.

Vodka Tasting - Pearl Cucumber, Pearl Caramel
Origin: USA
Supplier: Luxco Spirited Brands
Website: pearlvodka.com

Pearl Cucumber
Notes: 70 proof
Color: Clear
Nose: Clean cucumber, very mellow soft nose, almost no alcohol at all
Flavor: Medium bodied, very smooth, nice cucumber flavor. The finish is a tad short.

Pearl Caramel
Notes: 70 proof
Color: Light caramel color, almost like a Scotch.
Nose: Full rich nose fuming out of the glass before you even get to it. Smells like to need to unwrap it!
Flavor: I was afraid I wouldn’t like this flavor because of its boldness, but it has a true caramel flavor. A bit viscous and sweet and tastes more like a liqueur than vodka, but it will make a heck of martini mixed with a modifier to mellow it a bit.

Vodka Tasting - Godiva Chocolate Rasberry Vodka

Godiva Chocolate Raspberry
Origin: USA
Supplier: Diageo
Website: drinkgodiva.com
Notes: 60 proof, five times distilled.
Color: Clear
Nose: Both flavors shine through on the bouquet but the raspberry is dominant.
Flavor: Soft and luxurious, doesn’t taste like it has alcohol in it. Nice blended flavor throughout with the chocolate showing thru a bit more on the supple finish. Would certainly make a fun martini.

Vodka Tasting - Godiva Chocolate Vodka

Godiva Chocolate
Notes: 60 proof
Color: Clear
Nose: Soft and clean, subdued a bit.
Flavor: Godiva chocolate says it all; this is a refined flavor that will work well in martinis. The flavor lingers in your mouth well after drinking.

Vodka Tasting - Effen Black Cherry, Effen Cucumber

Effen Black Cherry
Origin: Holland

Effen Cucumber
Notes: 75 proof
Color: Clear

Vodka Tasting - 42 Below "Kiwi"

42 Below “Kiwi”

Vodka Tasting - Eristoff Wild Berry

Eristoff Black – Wild Berry
Origin: France
Supplier: Bacardi
Website: eristoff.com
Notes: 40 proof
Color: Inky, almost silvery purple
Nose: The nose is a light floral mixed berry, just like it says. It doesn’t look like it’s going to have that aroma when you first see the color!
Flavor: It’s fun, tastes like wild berries. Not sweet. The aroma and flavor match perfectly. The finish is quick and there is no kick, but at this low proof you don’t expect it. It is definitely unusual, so it fits this tasting perfectly.

Vodka Tasting - Crystal Skull

Crystal Skull
Origin: Newfoundland Canada
Supplier: Infinium Spirits
Website: crystalheadvodka.com
Notes: 80 proof. The vodka is filtered three times through charcoal, and then again, three times through 500 million-year-old crystals known as Herkimer diamonds. These quartz crystals are found in very few places in the world, including Herkimer, New York and regions in Tibet and Afghanistan. Perhaps because they share the raw material from which the original crystal heads were carved, they are thought to have spiritual qualities.
Color: Crystal clear
Nose: A bit medicinal at first then settling with nice peppery overtones.
Flavor: Clean and crisp, mild viscosity, which is what they want, you get a little rub of sweetness with a long, warm finish. Very nice.

Vodka Tasting - 42 Below

42 Below
Origin: New Zealand
Supplier: Bacardi
Website: 42below.com
Notes: 42% alcohol, 84 proof.

Vodka Tasting - Titos Handmade Vodka

Tito’s

Notes: Micro-distilled in an old-fashioned pot still. It is distilled 6 times and cleansed through activated carbon. Celebrating its American heritage and Texas roots, Tito’s Handmade Vodka has made it official by becoming the first and only spirit brand to be Certified Made in the USA. After working closely with the team at Made in USA Certified through a rigorous audit, Tito’s is very proud to announce this new certification.
Color: Very Clear
Nose: Tito’s has a very pronounced and individualistic nose. A bit of corn mash, it also has a vegetal character to it; green pepper is what I get.
Flavor: Creamy and soft entrance, with a nice mid-palette mouth warming rush. Finishes like silk. This vodka has a rich and silky flavor, that’s the key, it has flavor! It definitely deserves the kudos it gets.
