If you like the idea of sleeping in sub-zero temperatures and fighting your way through blizzards and gale-force winds, then sled dog racing is just for you! Every year, Alaska holds the Iditarod Sled Dog Race. Accompanied by 12 to16 dogs, mushers travel from Anchorage to Nome, over treacherous terrain, frozen rivers, and jagged mountain ranges, all in an effort to claim first place. But for those who call Alaska home, it is more than just a racetrack, it’s a part of their history. The Iditarod Trail was a lifeline for early settlers, making possible the delivery of supplies, medicine, and food to the surrounding towns. This race commemorates the history of the trail and its significance to Alaska’s growth.
